Living with type 1 diabetes can sometimes feel like a solo mission, but it doesn’t have to be that way. By opening up to loved ones about your diabetes, and providing them with the knowledge and tools they need to support you, you can create a strong support network that empowers you to thrive.
Family and friends often want to help, but they don’t know how. And we, as type 1 diabetics, don’t always know how to ask for it. If you’re wondering how to start the conversation, here are four things you can do right now to get your friends and family more involved in your diabetes journey.
Provide Education
Take the time to educate your loved ones about what type 1 diabetes is, how it affects your body, and what you need to do to manage it. Share resources, articles, or even invite them to join you at a diabetes education class or support group.
Encourage Open Communication
Create a safe space for open and honest communication about your diabetes. Let your loved ones know how they can support you, whether it’s by offering encouragement, helping you remember to check your blood sugar, or simply being there to listen when you need to talk.
Lead by Example
Show your loved ones how you manage your diabetes on a day-to-day basis. Let them see you checking your blood sugar, taking your insulin, and counting carbs. Leading by example can help demystify diabetes and show your loved ones that managing diabetes is just a part of your daily routine.
Set Boundaries
Don’t be afraid to set boundaries with your loved ones when it comes to their involvement in your diabetes care. While their support is invaluable, it’s essential to maintain autonomy and independence in managing your diabetes.
Additional Support for T1 Diabetes
How well you manage your diabetes, is often dependent on how much support you have. The more your loved ones know and understand about managing your diabetes, the better they can help you when you need it.
